Stephen Van Dien, PhD
Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer
Prior to starting Persephone, Steve spent 13 years at Genomatica, where he developed a bioprocess development platform integrating metabolic models, omics data, high-throughput strain engineering, and fermentation. As Director of Strain Engineering, he then led a team to develop a process for the production of 1,4-butanediol (BDO) from sugars, now a commercial product, and received the Presidential Green Chemistry Award in 2011.
Steve is an expert in the areas of metabolic engineering, industrial microbiology, systems biology, and microbial fermentation, and has co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications in those fields and is inventor on several issued patents. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley under the direction of Professor Jay Keasling. He then held two postdoctoral positions and was a research scientist at Ajinomoto in Japan prior to joining Genomatica.
Steve was also President of the Society of Industrial Microbiology (SIMB) in 2018-2019.
